Updated: Dec. 14, 2023

Before you turn on your KitchenAid mixer to whip up a recipe, here are six awesome facts you need to know about the iconic appliance.

Hoisting a KitchenAid mixer onto the countertop often opens a floodgate of fond food memories. With its powerful motor, rotating blade and solid base, it’s easy to see why this is our favorite stand mixer!

How much do you know about this iconic appliance? Here are six fun facts about KitchenAid mixers.

Fact No. 1: The first mixers were very expensive.

The 65-pound Model H-5, made by the Hobart Manufacturing Co. in Greenville, Ohio, sold in 1919 for $189 ($2,800 in today’s dollars). Fortunately, stand mixers are now more affordable. Here’s our Test Kitchen’s top model.

Fact No. 2: The mixer’s name reflects its usefulness.

Some company executives took the appliance home to test it out. But no one knew what to call the new invention until an executive’s wife called the appliance “the best kitchen aid I’ve ever had.”

Here’s what to look for before buying a stand mixer.

Fact No. 3: Vintage attachments still work.

Although attachments for the KitchenAid mixer—from knife sharpeners and can openers to silver buffers and food processors—have changed over the years, older accessories still fit the new models. (Psst: These are the KitchenAid attachments every home cook needs.)

Fact No. 4: They’ve had a similar look for more than 80 years.

In 1937, Egmont Arens designed the Model K stand mixer, bearing the familiar shape that would eventually get its own trademark and become a kitchen icon.

If your trusty mixer needs a tune-up, here’s a super easy way to fix it.

Fact No. 5: The mixer came only in white.

This was true until 1955, when Petal Pink, Island Green, Sunny Yellow, Satin Chrome and Antique Copper joined white as options for KitchenAid mixers. In 2018, the company introduced its first-ever color of the year, Bird of Paradise. Today, KitchenAid stand mixers come in more than 80 colors and finishes. You can also indulge in this gorgeous collection of patterned ceramic bowls.

Fact No. 6: KitchenAids are celebrating a big milestone.

Since its launch in 1919, the stand mixer has given chefs, bakers and home cooks ample reason to celebrate—and now the mixer is celebrating its 100th anniversary! In 2019 KitchenAid introduced the vintage-inspired color Misty Blue, available in stand mixers and a six-burner range, as part of its 100 Year Collection. KitchenAid also launched another colorful anniversary collection that’s left us obsessed!
